3. Members and Registration
This chapter is for the server’s owner and admins. It covers two tabs: one controls “how outsiders get in,” and the other controls “what happens to the people who get in.” After you click the gear icon on the right side of the tab bar (tooltip: User Settings) to open the settings panel, you find the Registration tab in the Security group. It handles the registration mode, password change verification, and invite codes. The Members tab is in the Server Settings group. It lists all members and lets you change roles, ban, unban, and kick. The owner and admins can both see these two tabs, and the content is mostly the same. The only differences are in two places, “changing roles” and “banning / kicking”: the owner can act on more members than an admin can. §3.3 and §3.4 cover each one.
Each of these tabs corresponds to one permission: Registration requires the Manage security permission, and Members requires the Moderate members permission. Members who have been granted these permissions can also see the matching tab; see §4.3.
3.1 Registration Mode (Including Password Change Verification)
Section titled “3.1 Registration Mode (Including Password Change Verification)”Click the gear icon on the right side of the tab bar (tooltip: User Settings) to open the settings panel, then click Registration in the Security group. The Registration Mode and Password Change Verification sections are at the very top of the tab.
Registration Mode
Section titled “Registration Mode”Registration Mode is the first section of this tab. The line below it reads “Control how new users can register.” It decides whether outsiders can register an account to join this server, and how.
The modes appear as a set of clickable cards. Each card shows the mode name in bold on the top line and a one-sentence description in small text on the bottom line. The card you have selected is highlighted with a colored border. One click submits and applies a mode; there is no separate save button. While the change is being submitted, the whole set of cards temporarily can’t be clicked.
The modes, word for word:
- Open — “Anyone can register”
- Invite Only — “Users need an invite code to register” (use it with the invite codes in §3.2)
- Closed — “Registration is disabled”
Once email is set up, a fourth mode appears: Email Verification — “Users must verify their email to register”.
Password Change Verification
Section titled “Password Change Verification”Once email is set up, a Password Change Verification section also appears below Registration Mode. The line below it reads “When enabled, password changes require email confirmation.”
On the right is a switch. Click it to turn the setting on or off; the change applies immediately, and you don’t need to save. When it’s on, members who change their own password must go through an extra email confirmation step.
3.2 Invite Codes
Section titled “3.2 Invite Codes”Invite codes are on the same Registration tab, in the bottom section below Password Change Verification. A divider line separates it, and its title is Invite Codes. Here you generate one-time or limited-use registration credentials. They are often used with the Invite Only mode.
Creating an Invite Code
Section titled “Creating an Invite Code”At the top of the section is a creation card: two number boxes side by side, with a create button below them.
Max Uses is a number box with the pre-filled hint 0 = unlimited. Enter 0 to let the code be used any number of times, or enter another number to limit how many times it can be used.
Expires In (hours) is also a number box. Its unit is hours, and its pre-filled hint is 0 = never expires. Enter 0 for no expiry, or enter another number to make the code expire after that many hours.
After you fill in both fields, click Create Invite Code to generate a new invite code. The button shows a loading state while the code is being created. The new code appears in the list below.
Invite Code List
Section titled “Invite Code List”All current invite codes are listed below the creation card. If there are none yet, the list shows “No invite codes yet.”
Each invite code has its own row. On the left, the code appears in a monospace font. A line of small text below it tells you its status: Uses followed by “times used / limit” (if the limit is set to 0, Unlimited appears there), and Expires followed by the expiry date (Never if no expiry date is set).
Each row has two buttons on the right:
- Copy button — normally shows Copy Code and copies the invite code to your clipboard. After a successful copy, it briefly shows Code copied! and then changes back.
- Delete button — a trash can icon with the tooltip Delete. Clicking it deletes the invite code immediately. Once deleted, the code can no longer be used to register.
3.3 Changing Roles
Section titled “3.3 Changing Roles”Click the gear icon on the right side of the tab bar (tooltip: User Settings) to open the settings panel, then click Members in the Server Settings group. This tab lists every member of the server and lets you change each person’s role (this section) and ban, unban, or kick them (§3.4). Anyone who holds the Moderate members permission can see this tab (the owner and admins always can; for granting permissions, see §4.3). Changing roles also requires the Administrator permission; see “Who Can Change Whose Role” in this section.
Member List Overview
Section titled “Member List Overview”The heading at the top of the tab is All Members, followed by a dash and the current number of members, in the format “All Members — {count}”. When there are no members, the page shows “No members found.”
Each member has a card in the list. From left to right:
- Avatar circle — shows the member’s custom avatar if they have one; otherwise, it shows the first letter of their nickname in uppercase. If the member has set an avatar border color, the circle has a colored ring around it.
- Nickname — if this row is you, a small (you) follows the nickname.
- The second line under the nickname is @username.
- On the right, a small colored pill is the role tag. It shows the member’s role word for word (owner / admin / member; bot accounts show bot).
For a banned member, a red tag that reads BANNED also appears next to the role tag.
Move the mouse over the right side of a row, and a row of action icons appears. You change roles and ban or kick members from these icons.
Changing a Role Inline
Section titled “Changing a Role Inline”Click the shield icon (tooltip: Change Role) on a member’s row. The role tag on the right of that row turns into a row of role buttons in place, each labeled with a role name (literally admin and member). The button for the member’s current role is semi-transparent and can’t be clicked; click the other button to submit the change. A Cancel button next to them exits without changing anything.
Who Can Change Whose Role
Section titled “Who Can Change Whose Role”The shield icon appears only for people who can change roles. Changing roles requires the Administrator permission: the owner always can; the admin role carries this permission by itself; and members who have been granted the Administrator permission can as well (see §4.3).
Which members you can act on depends on your own role:
- The owner can change the role of an admin or a member: promote a member to admin, or demote an admin back to member.
- Anyone other than the owner (an admin, or a member who has been granted the Administrator permission) can change only a member’s role, that is, promote a member to admin.
The shield icon never appears on the rows for the owner, bot accounts, or yourself. The assignable roles are always the same two: admin and member.
3.4 Ban / Unban / Kick
Section titled “3.4 Ban / Unban / Kick”Banning, unbanning, and kicking all happen on the same Members tab. As with changing roles, the action icons appear when you move the mouse over the right side of a member’s row:
- Ban — a prohibition icon (a circle with a slash through it), tooltip Ban Member. It appears on the rows of members who aren’t banned.
- Unban — a small green button labeled Unban Member. It appears on the rows of banned members.
- Kick — a person icon with an X, tooltip Kick Member.
Banning a Member
Section titled “Banning a Member”Click the prohibition icon on a member’s row, and a confirmation dialog titled Ban Member opens. The confirmation text includes the member’s nickname: “Are you sure you want to ban {nickname}? They will be immediately disconnected and unable to log in.”
In the middle of the dialog is a single-line text box where you enter the reason for the ban. The field, labeled Ban Reason, shows Reason for banning… as its pre-filled hint. When the banned member logs in with the correct password, the login page shows “Your account has been banned: {reason}”, so the reason you enter is shown to them word for word. Don’t put internal notes there.
At the bottom of the dialog are two buttons: Cancel and a red Ban Member button. When you click the red button, the member is disconnected immediately and can no longer log in.
Unbanning a Member
Section titled “Unbanning a Member”To lift a member’s ban, click the green Unban Member button on the right of that member’s row. The ban is lifted immediately, and the member can log in again.
Kicking a Member
Section titled “Kicking a Member”Click the person-with-an-X icon on a member’s row, and a confirmation dialog titled Kick Member opens. The confirmation text includes the nickname: “Are you sure you want to kick {nickname}? This will remove them from the server and delete their data.”
At the bottom of the dialog are two buttons: Cancel and a red Kick button. When you click the red button, the member is removed from the server, and their data is deleted along with them.
Who Can Ban / Kick Whom
Section titled “Who Can Ban / Kick Whom”Banning, unbanning, and kicking require the Moderate members permission: the owner always can; the admin role carries the Administrator permission, which covers this one too; and members who have been granted the Moderate members permission can as well, for example members who have had the Moderator preset applied (see §4.3). For someone who holds Moderate members but not the Administrator permission, only these three actions (ban, unban, and kick) appear on member rows.
As with changing roles, which members you can act on depends on your own role:
- The owner can ban, unban, and kick an admin or a member.
- Anyone other than the owner can act only on a member. Only the owner can unban a banned admin.
These actions never appear on the rows for the owner, bot accounts, or yourself.
