    8. Uploads and Resource Limits

This chapter is for the server’s owner and admins. It brings together, in one place, the upload sizes the server allows, the file types it blocks, and the quality members can choose when they share their screen. Click the gear icon on the right side of the tab bar (tooltip: User Settings) to open the settings panel, go to the Server Settings group, and click the Media & Uploads tab. The three settings in this chapter are arranged on that page from top to bottom.

Each setting on this page has its own Save button. You can’t click it when nothing has changed or while it is saving; once the setting is saved, a green Saved! appears briefly next to it. The owner and admins see exactly the same content.

At the top of the Media & Uploads tab are two upload size settings, one above the other: one covers the whole server, and the other covers DMs only. Both are number boxes, both use MB, and both have a minimum of 0, but they apply to different scopes.

Max Upload Size (MB) sets the upload limit for each file across the whole server, in MB. The on-screen description reads (verbatim): “Leave empty or 0 for default (20MB).”

This number box has a minimum of 0, and its hint number is 20. Enter a number and click Save, and it takes effect. If you leave it empty or enter 0, the server uses the default of 20 MB.

For text channels and voice channels, you can also lower the per-file limit for an individual channel under File space in the channel settings; a channel’s actual per-file limit never exceeds the value here (see §2.1).

DM Upload Size Limit (MB) sets the upload limit for each file in DM conversations only, also in MB. The on-screen description reads (verbatim): “Maximum file upload size for DM conversations in MB. Leave empty to use global upload limit.”

This number box has a minimum of 0, and its hint text is Use global. Enter a number and click Save, and it applies only to DMs. If you leave it empty, DMs fall back to the server-wide value of Max Upload Size (MB) above.

File Extension Blacklist lists the file types that may not be uploaded. The on-screen description reads (verbatim): “Comma-separated list of blocked file extensions (e.g. exe, bat, sh).”

It is a full-width, single-line text box whose hint text is exe, bat, sh, cmd, ps1. Enter a comma-separated list of extensions in the box, and uploads of the types listed here are blocked.

Below the text box is a Save button; click it to save. After you make a change (when the text differs from the saved list), a Reset button also appears next to it; click it to discard your current edits and restore the saved list. Once saved, Saved! appears.

Screen Share Limits sets the highest quality every member can use when sharing their screen. The on-screen description reads (verbatim): “Set the maximum resolution, frame rate and bitrate every member may use. Leave empty for no limit.”

This section has three controls, from top to bottom. Each works independently, and each can be left empty (that item then has no limit):

    • Resolution: a drop-down menu with the choices Unlimited, 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p.
    • Frame rate (FPS): a drop-down menu with the choices Unlimited, 24, 30, 60, and 120 fps.
    • Bitrate: a number box in Mbps that accepts 10 to 200; leaving it empty (the box then shows Unlimited) means no limit.

These three settings are maximums, not fixed values: the quality members actually share never exceeds the numbers you set here, and leaving an item empty means that dimension has no limit.

Below this section is a Save button, which you can’t click when nothing has changed. After you make a change, Reset appears on its right so you can discard your edits. Once saved, Saved! appears.
